​Preventing your pet from getting parasites is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Parasites like fleas, ear mites, heartworms, roundworms and longworms can devastate your pet's health if left untreated. Here at Animal Clinic's of The Woodlands, our passion is for your pets to live long and healthy lives.

While there are many available options for heartworm, flea, tick, and intestinal parasite treatment/prevention, please discuss specific prevention and treatment options with our veterinarians at your pet's next check up. Our clinics also follow Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) guidelines for parasite prevention. 

Flea Bites And Allergies​

​Most pets are not allergic to the flea itself but to the saliva that is secreted when a flea bites.  It is important to note that fleas are difficult to find and it only takes one bite to cause signs.  These signs include intense scratching or chewing, hair loss and over grooming-especially in cats.  Flea allergy is very common and comprehensive flea control is crucial. 

What Is Heartworm Disease?

​Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is caused by a single, or often times many worms that can live in the heart, lungs or other blood vessels of your pet. The only way that your dog or cat can get heartworms is through the bite of an infected mosquito. There is no way to tell if a mosquito is infected or not - This is why heartworm prevention is so important.

Heartworms In Dogs

​Dogs are natural hosts for heartworms, which means that the worm grows to full maturity and reproduce. When untreated, heartworms will continue to reproduce. There have been cases where dogs have harbored up to several hundred heartworms in their bodies. Heartworm is easy to prevent and costly to cure. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone.

Heartworm In Cats

​Heartworm disease does not affect cats the same as it does dogs, therefore it often goes undetected. Even though cats are not natural hosts for heartworms, and most of the heartworms do not mature to adulthood, it is important to remember that even immature worms can do a significant amount of harm. The lack of awareness, combined with a low prevention priority for felines, has led to many cats suffering from respiratory disease that has caused lasting damage to the lungs. Moreover, the medication used to treat heartworm infections in dogs cannot be used in cats, so prevention is the only means of protecting cats from the effects of heartworm disease. 

Because symptoms can be subtle, and often times fatal, a monthly heartworm prevention regimen is just as important for felines as it is for canines. Treatment should be administered as early as possible in the course of the disease.
